Jelly Cabinet Makeover

When I saw this old jelly cabinet in a local consignment store I knew it could be the perfect piece to makeover. I needed a display piece for the Amy Howard at Home paint that I was going to be selling in our new space at Painted Tree Boutiques. I have a small space, 7′ x 10′, in my new second location so I didn’t want anything that was going to take up the whole booth. It was the perfect size.

The inside didn’t have enough shelves but I knew Dennis, my husband, could add some for me.

The space behind the doors on the bottom would be great for back-stock.

The drawers would be great extra display space. But I also wanted to update the cabinet using my Amy Howard paint products. I used Glazed Over mixed with a little Bauhaus Buff One Step paint to give the outside of the cabinet a wash. It helped to tone down the orange in the original finish. I cleaned the piece to remove dust and oils. Then I brushed on the Glazed Over mixture a section at a time, wiping with cheesecloth to give the washed effect. Glazed Over doesn’t require any kind of top coat finish.
Dennis added 3 shelves inside the top part of the cabinet. I painted the inside with a 50/50 mix of Bauhaus Buff and Linen. I used Clear Wax for a durable finish that adds a nice sheen and allows for easy clean-up.
Next I wanted chalkboards on the inside of the panels on the doors. I used Rust-Oleum Chalkboard paint following the directions on the can. After it had dried properly, I was able to season the chalkboards using the side of a piece of chalk. Seasoning keeps the chalkboard from getting ghost images of writing when it is erased. Now it is ready for our move-in at Painted Tree Boutiques!

It fits perfectly in my space and will hold plenty of paint. I love thinking that this old jelly cabinet used to be in someone’s kitchen holding jellies, canned goods, or other kitchen wares. Now it has a new life in my space! We moved in December 7th and are ready for the grand opening!
