Cooking For A Crowd
One of the things Dennis (aka Mr Butterfly) and I both enjoy doing is cooking together, especially cooking for a crowd! One of the other things we love to do is cook for Hope Is Alive, an addiction recovery house here in Overland Park, KS. Dennis usually grills up the main course and sometimes a veggie. I make the side dishes. And one of the house’s favorites is my Old Settler’s Baked Beans. I actually got this recipe from a good friend at least 20 years ago!
Jump to RecipeThese beans are so delicious! There are 3 types of beans, hamburger and bacon in them. They could be a meal in themselves!
First, brown the bacon and drain. Break the bacon into half inch or so pieces. Set aside.
Brown the hamburger with the chopped onion and drain. Set aside.
In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, brown sugar, ketchup, BBQ sauce, mustard, molasses, chili powder, salt and pepper. Set aside.
Drain the kidney beans and the pinto beans in a colander and rinse. Mix them into the sauce mixture along with the undrained Pork & Beans.
Add in the browned hamburger, onion and bacon pieces. Stir together well.
Pour the mixture into a prepared 9 x 13 pan, sprayed with cooking spray. I use disposable pans so the Hope Is Alive house doesn’t have to worry about getting pans back to me. There are usually 12-13 men at the Hope Is Alive house that we cook for so this cooking for a crowd recipe is perfect! I double the recipe when I make it for them.
Another option for cooking is to put the bean mixture in a crockpot and cook it on low 4-5 hours. I would stir occasionally to prevent burning.
